New fic extract. D/S. AU. Self-explanatory enough. If this sucks and I should just drop it right now, be kind enough to let me know, please. :)

[Forever Hold Your Peace]

"You may kiss the bride," said the priest at last.

People started cheering and applauding, standing up to congratulate the new Mr. and Mrs. John Taglieri. The ceremony had been a beautiful one, and some happy tears had been shed not only by the newlyweds, but also by a good few of the invitees. Carol didn't think she had ever felt this content before. Everything in her life looked so perfect, now. She was smiling. Susan was watching her beaming face, and while she was genuinely happy for her friend, she found herself unable to wholeheartedly partake in the obligatory gushing session her fellow bridesmaids had started the very moment Tag had lifted Carol's veil. A tiny piece of her heart was crushed, deep down, knowing that Doug Ross, whom Carol had always shared a special bond with, had eventually missed his chance to reconquer her.

6:02, the reception had to be going on full-swing now, he thought to himself. It had briefly crossed Doug's mind a couple times before, that maybe the reason he hadn't been invited to Carol's wedding to Tag, was that she feared he might interrupt the ceremony, or cause a scene of some sort, like he had at their engagement party. Hell, he wasn't even sure he trusted himself not to, had he been in attendance. But he knew all too well that wasn't really the one reason he didn't make the guestlist. The reason he hadn't been invited, was that he was - for obvious enough reasons - quite simply not wanted. But God, what he wouldn't have given to see Carol in a bridal gown. He knew she'd be beautiful.

He wondered for a second if Diane had gone. But probably not, he corrected himself, since Jake had been in to see him just a couple moments earlier, and she would've taken him. Conni naggingly pointing out to him - as if he wasn't well aware - that Carol was now officially another's wife put an end to his thoughts of the Leeds, which was not necessarily a bad thing. Still, it only reminded him of the sore fact that this was a crappy, crappy day.
