HEROES POST! What?

Yes. Welcome new friends, btw! :D I've ~decided~ that even though I'm pretty sure I know the exact outcome of the one story I'm ~invested in~ still, I want to watch this season. Will I never learn, you ask? Probably not. So I'm definitely going to need support (lolol I'm so dramatic) and I'm very thankful for you guys.

I got a whole bunch of (my) DVDs in the mail today, including Heroes S3. First thing I watched: all of the deleted scenes back to back. It was great because there's a lot of excellent stuff in there, and it was a little upsetting because so much of it was all good and relevant. My thoughts, let me show you them.

Firstly, I couldn't help but notice some trends: most of the deleted material was about Mohinder, Nathan, Tracy, and Matt. And Molly appeared outside of "I Am Become Death"! Hardly anything pertaining to Sylar (one extended scene from IABD) or Peter (see Sylar + an alternate scene from "Into Asylum"). I don't mean to imply whoever's in charge of final cuts is playing favorites here, but... Yeah, that's exactly what I'm implying. :-#

Secondly, if you were wondering where all the good writing had gone? There's a big chunk of your answer there: the cutting room floor. It's baffling, really. Of course there's a couple pointless bits - Mohinder lifting heavy stuff, Claire receiving a box, Angela waking up - and then there's honest-to-gods awesome character moments and entire plot points that I could never imagine in a billion years not keeping in my show.

Not to forget the absurd (and now absurdly traditional) lack of outtakes from the finale, which is sad and begs the question: are they ashamed of something?

The latter is obviously personal preference, and doesn't impede on my appreciation of the aired episodes, but the first two points, IMO, shockingly showcase how frequently decent writing suffers at the hand of ~time constraints~ on this show (which I suspect is really code for "LOL WHO CARES ABOUT THESE GUYS ANYWAY"). Specific examples? You bet:

  • Knox's "Villains" storyline: I find it nothing short of bewildering that it was cut out completely. That script was probably all Jamie Hector could hope for when he joined the show, and then they go and kindly erase it from existence. (Stay classy, Heroes.) Not only did the story provide a somewhat interesting character background for Knox - which is infinitely better than, you know, nothing; it also fit with Matt's established characterization circa season one perfectly.

  • Nathan & Tracy: granted, romance never was the heart of this show, nor do I think it should ever be. I don't even ship these two. However, with a line here and a touch there and a 30-second scene, would you imagine what was perchance achieved? *gasp* A non-obnoxious, believable caring bond! I know. It was kind of amazing to witness, because the feeling that perspired was so wholly different from what made it to air last year. So much so, I'd have without a doubt assumed those scenes were cut for creative reasons, if it weren't for the fact they were spread out over several different episodes. Ergo, face meet palm. The most interesting thing here is it showcased Nathan and especially Tracy, as individuals, in a very different light - for instance her allegiances are a lot clearer after an outtake from "Our Father" - and both somehow become more sympathetic as a result.

  • This might be me finding excuses for my boy (Selective Dedication: it's not just for show execs! :D) but it seems to me Nathan's ~change of heart~ at the end of Vol. 3 becomes a lot more nuanced and consistent in light of another outtake from "Our Father."

  • Mohinder also got shafted in a pretty big way, believe it or not. I'm not saying any cut scenes made his Vol. 3 arc any less ridiculous, because no amount of justifying that nonsense will do. In fact, his Vol. 3 cut scenes are just as ridiculous, though this one bit where he's ~prepping~ Nathan and Tracy for ~operation~ extolls on his motivations in a much more seamless manner than some canon scenes have. And for justice, because I remember there being talk of a scene where Mohinder turns Molly in to Arthur, it wasn't like that at all. Not even a little bit. And then there's a specific scene from "Turn And Face The Strange," in Vol. 4, that was at least three(!) kinds of interesting(!):
    1. there is actual (and you want to sit down for this) TIMELINE CLARIFICATION(!!!)
    2. Mohinder shows a perseverance seemingly impervious to homeward flouncing, and
    3. a new lulzy Chandra-centric ship is born!

Come on now, why would they cut that? Don't they remember Vol. 1 at all? ;)

There are more. I'm not suggesting all of this should, or even could, have been kept in, but I certainly feel like we could have used some of this wasted character development and nice surprising subplots in lieu of an umpteenth cutesy Sylar/Elle electrokinesis 'n' doe-eyes scene and other pointless/retconny/both preposterous stunts (take your pick).

In conclusion, as the next season nears, these extras both gave me hope that the writers actually are still capable of putting in some more-than-average work, and worried that their best efforts are unrecognized (at best) or plainly disregarded by higher-ups. I say: somebody needs to get their head out of the sand, stat! But hey, no matter what ends up on our screens, I'll be watching (against my better judgment, heh) and hoping until the end that this is the year they somehow bring Awesome back. Have a great season, y'all! :)

And now, a fanvid! I started this back in May, after the finale, whilst I was very much in the throes of mourning. I figured I should finish it before S4 rolled around, so there it is. I'm quite pleased with some parts, but on the whole it was a rush job done over the weekend and I'm an oversensitive n00b. Translation: I probably wouldn't take harsh criticism very gracefully, so... yeah. Rather be wimpy than vexed! :D Anyhow.

Oh, man, I haven't seen the deleted scenes yet since I'm not gonna be getting the DVDs until they come out here in the UK, but now I reaaaally want to. What was the deleted Molly scene? And what happens in that vaguely important Mohinder scene in more detail, if you don't mind? You're just teasing me too much for me to handle, here! ;P

Why am I not surprised none of the Sylar stuff was cut? *sigh*

Oooh, I liked your video! Really nicely put together and I love that relationship. :)

Plus, I had somehow forgotten quite how very attractive the Pasdar is until I watched it! Bring on Season 4! /shallow

Psst. I might attempt to rip and upload the deleted scenes in the near future.

Re: Molly, Arthur ~needs~ her power to find I think Peter, so he goes to Mohinder and says something about being a family man blah blah so Mo will be thinking of Molly, and reads his thoughts. (Meanwhile Mohinder is like, "wtf is this conversation?") Next thing you know, Arthur's in India creeping up on Molly like a creepy creepster, telling her it's okaaay, he's just going to take her power, don't be afraiiiid. And then they move offscreen and Molly screams the most blood-chilling scream evar. :(

That other Mohinder scene I mentioned takes place in his father's apartment after he's started gathering clues about Coyote Sands. He reflects that in 1961, Chandra would have been in school working on his doctorate. His landlord comes up and gives him more sass about gtfo'ing, but Mohinder asks him what else he knows about Chandra and his work. Cue ~revelashuns~ (they used to share beers, Chandra had nightmares that made him scream at night). When the landlord suggests Mohinder flounce before he drives himself insane much like his dad, rather than take offence or get his bitchy on, Mohinder resolves: "I can't. Not yet."

Ugh, their hard-on for Sylar has never been so ridiculous. Sadly I suspect it isn't about to subside any time soon. In their olden days they'll look back on the show and be e-mailing each other, "You know, I was just thinking we had some nifty characters on Heroes besides Sylar, LOL! Oh well. Bygones! LOL." Meanwhile, my one foolish hope is that, one day, someone half as talented and dedicated to honest storytelling as Ronald D. Moore will give Heroes the same type of treatment he gave the original Battlestar Galactica. Trufax, that would make me weep with joy.

Thank you for the kind words on my video. :) And yeah, Pasdar is a total fox. XD

Aw, I liked it, it made me feel all sad and dramatic too. :D I don't remember the Nathan in the rain scene at all - was that deleted?

Speaking of deleted scenes, I think I'm going to watch my S3 DVD tonight. I think this 'character development' and 'timeline clarification' is going to have to be seen to be believed.

Nathan in the rain was from "Out Of Time" in season 2. After Bob tells Nathan that Peter is alive, he somehow gets himself to the Wandering Rocks pub in Cork. (Though how he even found out about it remains a mystery. I'd blame it on lazy writing, but now I'm more inclined to credit episode editing fail.)

I bought the S3 DVDs last week and I haven't watched anything on them yet... :( I know I'll be ok once the show STARTS, but I have so much latent frustration over what seems to be their own superpower, which is to turn AWESOME into FAIL.

Reading over what was omitted make me sad. That Knox story had so much potential, and cutting important character-building dialogue like the Mohinder/Nathan/Tracy scene? UGH. Ugh I say.

Tim Kring just needs to get off Sylar's jock and we'd all be ok, but it's not likely that will be happening soon.

THIS ALL BEING SAID. I'm reaaaaaaally excited for the Carnival stuff omg 8D And Hiro/Ando always have the potential for hilarity and adorableness (FUCK I just remembered Daphne is gone skiajflsdjfkjgfkd whyyyyy cruel world). I hope Tracy gets to kick ass and take names this year.

Also, awesome video bb! *weeps for Naterz*

their own superpower, which is to turn AWESOME into FAIL.

Haha, seriously! I'm still majorly frustrated with the show as well, and not just over the whole Nathan fiasco. One of things that bug me the most is how they trifled with so many powers. The original ones were fine! And also the lame waste of Adam Monroe (I will never get over that, ever.) I'm just waiting for the 2030/2031 remake now, lmao. But I have to watch S4!

I'm excited for the carnie stuff as well, though I think ink girl's "power" is stupid. I'm intrigued enough that I wanna know what's going on. And of course I'm still madly in love with the cast!

Thanks about the vid! :D

Man, I love ZQ, but I think the best thing for Heroes would be his leaving. I mean, they're sacrificing other character's storylines for, imo, kinda crappy Sylar ones just to keep him in the episode! :\ I am planning on watching the show anyway -- just sort of one of those things, you know? Can't look away...

Date: 2009-09-15 12:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gossy16.livejournal.com
Agreed. At this point, I really feel like the show and ZQ's career are mutually destructive. It's sad that no one else seems to notice, least of all the concerned parties.

*seconding this*

Also reading your deleted scenes recaps I'm all sad and depressed now. :/ I really wanted to like Tracy, and although Nathan was never my favorite character I sure did want his MO to make some effing sense; it's awful to hear the writers did actually manage those things, but it was cut. Even worse than if they'd never written it at all. I tend to blame Kring; he's the one who keeps claiming Heroes is about adrenaline rush! fast-paced storytelling! bang bang bang!!!!!! and forgets that that's not what volume 1 was about. At all.

Date: 2009-09-15 12:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gossy16.livejournal.com
My thoughts exactly. If the writers are putting in quality work, and those scenes even make it to production, who gets the last call? Because that guy is a complete tool who can't tell good storytelling from shallow ratings ploys even when it bites him on the ass.

NEEDS MORE NATHAN!!! I would love to see the deleted scenes. I agree with you here. I enjoy the Sylar character but season 3 definitely could have used a little less of him, especially the Sylar/Elle stuff, and in its place they could have used some more Nathan/Tracy or Mohinder or Knox. I would have loved to see some of his backstory.

Beautiful video!

Ha, I could not agree more. I was designing the template for my Heroes episode ~reviews~ this season (meet me at my nerdiest) and I'm pretty much always going to open with a section I like to call "Nathanites Never Say Die!" It amuses me at the very least.

The Knox backstory was very cool to see, I honestly don't get why they cut it.

And thank you! :D

That video was so sweet hon! I love how you blended the running scenes between the two characters, and the glass smashing scenes (OMG didn't realise how similar they were!), and some gorgeous little moments like something Nathan when he looked SO proud during the lyrics proud, and dream thing <--- I think that was the 2nd one I was thinking of *-) Beautifully done. You crafted their relationship wonderfully (which is a bit of a hit out for me cause I'm such a HRG/Claire parental shipper :$ ) and it was nice to see it through your eyes.

Thank you so much for the great feedback! :D I adore that scene in "1961" where you can feel in your gut how proud both Noah AND Nathan are of Claire. ♥ It's so heartwarming, and I couldn't think of a better image for that part of the song.

Nathan and Claire have tons of similarities that are hinted at throughout the show, from the way they first approach their powers (thinking they're a freak and wishing they didn't have abilities) to their staking claims to a normal life (end of Vol. 2, "No more running, no more hiding, no more secrets/lies." IT'S THE SAME FREAKING LINE! :D) I am so, so, so very disappointed to know their bond will never more be expanded upon.

LOL, sorry for the novel. Thank you very much again for the kind words. :D

Aww. Not gonna lie, theirs was probably my favorite relationship on the show, lately. Freaking ineffable. And I, too, am going to miss them like a limb. And whenever either Peter or Claire interact with Sylar (or Sathan, silent "h") it's going to break my heart all the more. Thank you for the kind words on my video, I'm glad you liked it. *hugs*

I'm Heroes' bitch forever. The only thing that could make me stop watching it is Peter dying. But other than that,I will always watch it *lol*

And besides: I'm actually really excited for the new season. All that Carnival stuff looks fantastic!

You will always watch it, period. Even if/after Peter dies. How do I know? Because I was swearing up and down the internets after the crapfest that was volume 3 that I would quit watching the very second they killed Nathan. They have, and I'm still here. FML. XD

The carnival stuff does look good, though. I'm looking forward to the character of Samuel, anyways.
